QUICK ANSWER

A replacement Mont Blanc roof rack or roof box key is ordered by the code stamped on the lock barrel face. Most Mont Blanc cylinders fall in the Eurolocks 25001–27000 or 43001–49000 ranges, the LAS/Ronis R001–R224 range or the Thule-type 001–250, N001–N200 and E001–E200 ranges, and the key is cut to that code before dispatch.

The number on your Mont Blanc lock face tells you everything. Match it to the right series below, order a Mont Blanc roof rack key cut to that code, and the new key turns the lock the day it arrives. No original key needed, no locksmith, no dealer. This guide shows you where the code hides, how to tell which series you have and what to do when the stamping won't read.

Where the code is on a Mont Blanc lock

The code is stamped on the flat face of the lock barrel, the metal ring around the keyhole, and it is repeated on the bow of the original key. That is the only number you need. Model names, EAN barcodes and the article number on the packaging do not identify the key, so do not bother hunting for them.

On roof bars the lock sits in the end cap or the foot cover. Open the cover, look at the barrel head-on, and the stamping is right there. On a roof box it is on the lid lock, sometimes on both locks if the box has two. Road grime hides it more often than wear does. Wipe the face with a cloth, then light it from the side with a phone torch rather than straight on; the stamping throws a shadow and becomes readable.

Some newer Mont Blanc carriers only carry the number on the key itself. If the barrel face is genuinely blank, check the fitting instructions that came with the bars. Mont Blanc's own guidance suggests writing the key number in the manual at installation, and a surprising number of people actually did.

What a Mont Blanc code looks like. A plain number such as 25 631 or 46 208, a three-digit number such as 118, or a letter-prefixed code such as R087, N072 or E145. Two locks on the same set of bars normally share one code, so one key opens both ends.

Which code series your Mont Blanc uses

The format of the number tells you the series, and the series tells you which product to order. Mont Blanc does not make its own lock cylinders. It buys them from Eurolocks, LAS/Ronis and the same supplier Thule uses, and each supplier has its own numbering scheme. Find your code's format in the table and follow the link.

Code format Series Lock maker Also used by Order here
Five digits, 25001 to 27000 Eurolocks 25001–27000 Eurolocks Thule, Atera, Kamei, Hapro, Rhino, Prorack, Givi, Levup, M-Way 25001–27000 key
Five digits, 43001 to 49000 Eurolocks 43–52 series Eurolocks Elite, Fort, Emka lockers and caravan compartments 43–52 series key
R followed by three digits, R001 to R224 LAS / Ronis R-series LAS / Ronis Thule (older racks), Hapro, Exodus, Renault and Peugeot accessories R1–R224 key
Three digits, 001 to 250 (with or without an N prefix) Thule-type N / 001–250 Thule supplier (Lowe & Fletcher profile) Thule, Halfords, Atera, Karrite, Jetbag, Ford and Vauxhall accessories 001–250 key
E followed by three digits, E001 to E200 E-series Eurolocks Thule-compatible mounting points, Atera bike carriers, Chrysler and Mopar racks E001–E200 key

Every one of these ships as a pair of keys cut to your code. Same price whether the lock is on a Mont Blanc, a Thule or an Atera, because it is the same blank. All five are listed together on our Mont Blanc roof rack keys page.

The number decides, not the brand name on the bar. Two Mont Blanc bars from the same year can carry cylinders from different suppliers. Go by the code format on your lock, never by which series you assume Mont Blanc "usually" uses.

Mont Blanc bars, boxes and OEM racks

Mont Blanc is a Swedish load-carrier maker, based in Dalsjöfors, and has been building roof bars since 1947. Its current range covers the MB Xplore, Activa, AMC, Supra, Flex and Furka roof bars, the Altitude 350 and 450 roof boxes and bike carriers such as the Sarek. Older lines you will still find on second-hand cars include the Vista roof boxes, the Aero and AeroWing bars and the Barracuda bike carrier.

The badge on the end cap can mislead you

Mont Blanc has spent years supplying roof bars to car manufacturers. A dealer-fitted rack on a Subaru Forester, a VW, a Suzuki Grand Vitara or a Ford can be a Mont Blanc product wearing the car maker's logo. Owners on the Subaru and VW forums find this out the hard way when the dealer says it cannot supply a key. The lock does not care who badged the bar. Read the code, order by the code.

Roof bars

Lock in the end cap or foot cover. One code for both ends of the set in nearly every case.

Roof boxes

Lock on the lid, sometimes one each side. Check both faces; they normally match.

Bike carriers

Lock on the frame clamp or the bar mount. Code on the barrel face or the original key.

OEM-branded racks

Subaru, VW, Suzuki, Ford and others. Often Mont Blanc-made. The code identifies the cylinder regardless of badge.

How to order a Mont Blanc key by code

Ordering takes a couple of minutes once you have the number. No original key, no locksmith, no visit to a dealer.

  1. 1

Read the code on the barrel face. Clean it, light it from the side and write the code down exactly. Watch for 0 versus O and 1 versus I on worn stampings; on Mont Blanc cylinders the code is numeric apart from a possible R, N or E prefix.

  2. 2

Match the format to a series. Use the table above. Five digits starting 25 or 26 is the 25001–27000 key; five digits starting 43 to 48 is the 43–52 series; R plus three digits is Ronis; three digits alone or with an N is the 001–250 key; E plus three digits is the E-series.

  3. 3

Open the product page and enter the code. Type the code into the code field on the listing. Check it against the stamping once more before you add to cart. A single wrong digit produces a key that looks right and does not turn.

  4. 4

Receive the pair, cut and ready. We cut both keys to your code before dispatch, the same working day Monday to Friday. Insert, turn, done. Nothing to programme and no chip inside; these are plain mechanical keys.

Not sure which series you have? Send a clear photo of the lock face before ordering. The shape of the keyway identifies the series even when the stamping is faint, and we would rather check first than have you wait for a key that does not fit.

Why Thule, Atera and Kamei keys share the same series

Roof rack brands buy their locks from a handful of cylinder makers, so the same key blank turns up under many badges. Eurolocks, part of the Lowe & Fletcher group, supplies cam locks to Mont Blanc, Thule, Atera, Kamei, Hapro and a long list of OEM accessory programmes. LAS/Ronis supplied the R-series cylinders to Mont Blanc and to Thule's older racks. Mont Blanc itself was part of the Thule group for a period, which is one more reason the two brands' code ranges overlap so heavily.

For you this means one thing. A "Mont Blanc key" is really a Eurolocks 25 631 key, or a Ronis R087 key, and the product you order is defined by that series and code. It also means the compatibility lists on our product pages are genuine: the 25001–27000 key really does fit Mont Blanc, Rhino, Givi, Levup and Prorack, because they all fitted the same cylinder.

What it does not mean is that any Thule key will open any Mont Blanc lock. Same series and same code, yes. Different code, no. If you already own a Thule rack and want the background on its N-series numbering, our Thule roof rack key guide covers it. For the general principle of ordering by code, see the complete guide to roof rack replacement keys.

When the code won't read, or the lock is damaged

A faint stamping is nearly always recoverable. Side lighting and a close-up photo bring out numbers that are invisible to the naked eye, and if the photo still shows nothing we can usually place the series from the keyway profile alone. Send it before you order.

A broken barrel is a different problem. If a key snapped off inside the cylinder, or the plug spins freely without engaging, a new key will not fix it. Roof-bar cylinders are standard cam locks and can be swapped for a replacement barrel by a locksmith or a handy owner. Mont Blanc's own short-barrel lock kit has been discontinued, so a universal cam barrel of the same length is the usual route. For a seized or broken roof-box lock the honest answer is a locksmith or a new lid lock, since a key cut to code can only operate a cylinder that still works.

Do not force a stiff lock. A roof rack cylinder that has sat through two winters is often just dry. A drop of lock lubricant and a few gentle turns frees it. Forcing it with pliers on the old key is how a cheap spare-key job turns into a drilled-out barrel.

One last case. If the code on your Mont Blanc lock does not match any of the five formats above, it may belong to a series we do not currently stock. Send a photo of the lock face and the code, and we will tell you straight away whether we can cut it.

Frequently asked questions

Which code series does my Mont Blanc roof rack or roof box use?

Five digits starting 25 or 26 is the Eurolocks 25001 to 27000 series, five digits starting 43 to 48 is the 43 to 52 series, R plus three digits is Ronis, three digits with or without an N is the 001 to 250 series and E plus three digits is the E-series. The number on the lock face decides, not the badge on the bar.

Where is the key code on a Mont Blanc roof rack?

On the flat face of the lock barrel in the end cap or foot cover, and repeated on the bow of the original key. Some newer carriers carry it only on the key.

Will a Thule or Atera key open a Mont Blanc lock?

Only if it is the same code series and the same number, because the brands share cylinder suppliers but each code is unique. A different number will not turn the lock.

What if the Mont Blanc key I receive does not fit?

Check the code entered at checkout against the barrel stamp first, since one wrong digit gives a key that looks right and will not turn. If the code was correct the key is covered by a 12-month warranty and is replaced.
